It is without doubt that it is our people who make Severn Hospice so special

Meet some of the team who have shared their favourite things about their role, what motivates them and why they love working here.

A rewarding place to work

“My passion has always been caring for people and when I qualified as a registered nurse, I knew my local hospice was where I wanted to be. It’s a privilege to support patients and families during such a difficult time, caring for all their clinical and holistic needs and ensuring their lives are comfortable and fulfilling as possible.

I honestly don’t think there’s a more rewarding role. Over my 20 years of nursing, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many relatives who return to the hospice to remember loved ones and it’s very special reconnecting and sharing memories.”

It’s all about the people

“My job is so varied, from essential day-to-day routines to supporting large projects like the beautiful new ward at Apley. In this job the little detail counts and contribute to the smooth running and high standards of presentation across our sites.

Every good building needs solid foundations and I love the fact the estates team perform that function for the hospice, supporting all areas so patients receive the best possible care and experience.”

It’s the personal touches

“I take great pride in preparing tasty home-cooked and nutritious meals for patients and families. I like to think of it as caring through food and take the time to learn about individual preferences, dietary requirements and the way they like it served.

It’s the personal touches that make a difference too, like baking a lemon cheesecake by special request or arranging a special birthday tea. I find it immensely satisfying that the food we prepare with such care and thoughtfulness brings reassurance and comfort.”

Nothing is to much

“I take great pride in what we do to create a friendly, comfortable home-from-home feel. Lovely soft linen, fresh flowers and being on hand for every non-clinical need – nothing is too much. Being there for relatives and guests is equally as important. We instinctively balance the need for support and privacy, times for laughter and reflection – and we always know when you’d like a brew.”

Approachable and friendly face

“Every aspect of my job is centred around supporting others, from greeting ward visitors and answer the phone to general administration so our nurses are freed up to spend more time caring for patients.

I’m often the first point of contact for visitors and gain great satisfaction from making their time here with loved ones as comfortable as possible.

Being an approachable face and a friendly ear helps bring a little normality to challenging times. I’m so proud to be part of such a caring organisation and support our wonderful doctors and nursing team in providing a hugely valued local service.”

It’s all about the people

“For me it’s all about our people; making sure they have everything they need in their role and creating a supportive, friendly, inclusive and empowering environment for now and the future. Without a great team we wouldn’t be able to provide the high levels of care we do, and I am so proud to play my part.”
