To mark Volunteers’ Week 2021, we said a huge Thank You to all those who give up their time and work free of charge in our hospices, shops, and gardens.  We have more than 1,000 volunteers in our organisation. At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, the large majority were asked to put… Read more »

Volunteer Ralph is proud of his role

Posted on

There can’t be many people who are prouder to be a volunteer with Severn Hospice than 74-year-old Ralph Prince.  Since December 1996, he has been a committed lottery collector.  And for the past five years he has helped out at our charity shop in Wem, sorting books, DVDs, and CDs, working on the till and meeting customers.  Ralph, who lives in Stanton-upon-Hine-Heath, is now back working as a volunteer in the shop after lockdown… Read more »

Head gardener is off for pastures new

A future of wildlife conservation and volunteer work beckons for our green-fingered head gardener.  After almost seven years, Tony Comley has decided the time has come to hang up his secateurs and move on to pastures new.   But he won’t be leaving us for good. Instead, he plans to be back as a regular volunteer.   Tony joined the team back in 2014 and has made… Read more »

Prayers are answered by tech-savvy chaplain

Our chaplain is not letting the pandemic stop him from providing spiritual support to our patients.  Before the pandemic, people who were either on our wards at or using our Day Services, met on the third Tuesday of the month to worship in our sanctuary.  But for almost a year they have been unable to do so, as many of them have been shielding and restrictions have been placed on those… Read more »

Taking inspiration from one of their most famous past pupils, students at a Shropshire school are attempting to virtually circumnavigate the world in, not 80 days, but 40.  And they are doing it all for charity.  To keep the 800 students at Shrewsbury School active during lockdown, philosophy teacher Giles Bell challenged them to run,… Read more »

A musician from London, who each year completes a crazy fundraising challenge, is running more than 1,000km during Lent to fundraise for us.  Finan Jones always chooses a charity close to his heart when he undertakes his challenges – which have included swimming 235.2km, surviving on just £47 for 47 days, and running 500km.  In the past he has raised… Read more »

Schoolgirl strides out on End-to-End challenge

Posted on

A Shropshire schoolgirl is walking from one end of the UK to the other without leaving her hometown to raise money for us after we cared for her mum.  Imogen Leith, or Immy as she is known, is just 11 years old but she is not letting her age or lockdown beat her and is determined to finish her marathon, 874-mile-long walk – the distance from Land’s… Read more »

Businesses praised for their support

Posted on

Although we had to cancel our major fundraising events for 2021, local businesses have been praised for their ‘incredible support’ despite facing their own financial challenges.  We made the tough decision last week to cancel our three most popular events, Pontesbury Potter, Colour Run and Dragon Boats, all of which attract hundreds of participants and bring in thousands of pounds in fundraising.  But the events’ corporate sponsors and… Read more »

Events cancelled for a second year

Posted on

We are dealing with another financial blow after deciding to cancel our programme of flagship events for a second year.   We took the difficult decision as we will not risk the health of supporters – or commit to the financial risk of organising its mass participation events – while so much uncertainty remains around mitigating… Read more »
