We are investing in the future of hospice care – and we need your help

Thank you for visiting our Pounds for Perry appeal page.

Perry Ward at our Shrewsbury hospice needs urgent care and significant investment now – £3 million – and you can help us today.

Perry is our oldest ward and the need for major repairs is something we can no longer manage with routine maintenance.

To put things right and make Perry fit for purpose for the next 35-plus years we need to invest a significant sum now – despite the challenges we face with rising day-to-day costs.

We have £2 million available from savings and trusts to support our plans and we are asking our supporters to help make up the £1 million difference.

Supporting our Pounds for Perry appeal means you are helping ensure we can continue to give our patients the quality of care they deserve.

Thank you.

What needs doing?

The roof is in a desperate condition and needs a full-scale replacement. Having endured more than 35 winters it is now a constant struggle to keep on top of leaks.

The electrical wiring in a building opened before the Berlin Wall came down is showing its age and requires a major upgrade to meet modern demands.

Plumbing and heating installed in the 1980s, and reliant on an inefficient boiler, cannot keep up with what we are asking it to do today so needs serious attention. If it failed, we estimate it would cost £45,000 to put a temporary repair in place.

The difference it will make

We can do more than just repair and replace what is already there.

Our investment will improve everything for patients who need to stay with us and their families.

The building wasn’t designed for the needs of patients who stay with us today – they are routinely coming with and need aids and equipment that means the rooms are too small.

Adding an extension to the building means we can increase the size of all our bedrooms, making them much more welcoming and better able to accommodate the needs of patients today.

The makeover will provide eight improved rooms for patients, a room for family members to stay if they need to, plus treatment rooms, consultation rooms and quiet rooms. Patients will have the privacy and dignity of their own en suite, and direct access to the gardens we know are such an important part of the caring environment we want to create.

For anyone who needs to stay with us, we want them to feel at home, comforted, cared for and in the right place.

Our plans for Perry will meet that need for years to come.

The Perry project couldn’t have come at a more challenging time for Severn Hospice. Our day-to-day running costs have increased by more than £2.5 million in the past two years and are continuing to rise – National Insurance changes and minimum wage increases alone have added a further £500,000 to our costs.

By supporting our £1 million appeal for Perry you are helping us today and tomorrow – donations will help fund the project directly, and if we are fortunate enough to raise more than we need we will add your kind donation to our general fund, which is what we draw on for our daily care.

Thank you.
