Bookworms can browse a selection of more than 2,000 books after our Ironbridge charity shop reopened its doors following an extensive refurbishment.

Our shop in The Square closed six weeks ago to undergo work to improve the experience for our supporters.

The shop’s longest serving volunteer, Audrey Biddulph, who has been helping out since our opened 21 years ago, was joined by nurse Amanda Brown and local schoolchildren to officially unveil the newly-refurbished shop at 10am on Thursday March 28.

Among the changes made to the former bank include an upgraded book room in the old safe of the building, which is now home to more than 2,000 books after doubling in size.

New volunteers and an assistant shop manager are also being sought as our shop starts its new chapter.

It is the latest of our 26 award-winning shops to undergo a planned refurbishment for shoppers and donors.

Our area shop manager, Annette Wallis is appealing for supporters to make donations of clothes, books and other preloved items.

She said: “Our staff and volunteers have been working hard in recent weeks to get our new-look store ready for shoppers ahead of its reopening this week.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming back our loyal supporters and hope they like what we’ve done with the shop.

“The hard work put in since we closed on February 11 will make the shop much better for our customers, easier for our volunteers to manage in the backroom, and ultimately mean more we can receive and sell more stuff.

“A big thank you to everyone who has already made generous donations to us; we’re still accepting people’s clothes, DVDs, games, books and more so any support is much appreciated.”

The work comes soon after the world famous Iron Bridge, which stands opposite the store in The Square, was unveiled with a new-look following a multi-million pound project.

Meanwhile, applications for the new assistant community shop manager are now being accepted until April 6.

The role will support the shop manager three days a week to help generate the money to fund care for families living with incurable illnesses in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales.
