Consultants in Palliative Medicine (2 Full Time Posts)

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established, innovative and expanding palliative care team providing services to people in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid-Wales.

We are looking for two enthusiastic Consultants to expand the range and capacity of services available across all care settings including the community, hospitals and the Hospice.

The appointment of the two Consultants follows on from a strategic review of services and the recent opening of Severn Hospice’s second, purpose designed inpatient and day unit in Telford complementing the existing facility in Shrewsbury and the day unit in Newtown, Powys.  This expansion of the specialist palliative care services is central to the implementation of the local, multi-agency palliative care strategy.

Severn Hospice has 29 registered beds, 3 day units, community and hospital based clinical nurse specialists and a busy Hospice at Home Service which is integrated with the Marie Curie Nursing Service. In addition there are established outpatient, lymphoedema and breathlessness clinics. Severn Hospice also hosts the local level 4 Psychological Services.

Clinical Services are supported by the Hospice’s own Pastoral and Bereavement teams and Educational unit.

In addition to the two Consultant posts, medical cover will be provided by a full time Medical Director, 2 WTE Specialty Doctor/Medical Officers, Clinical Assistants and SpRs. In addition, the Hospice hosts GP Registrars and F1 Junior Doctors in training. Furthermore, the Welsh Assembly Government has recently confirmed funding of an additional 0.6 WTE Consultant to serve our Powys catchment population.  This post will be appointed in Spring 2010.  This will bring the Consultant establishment to 3.6 WTE posts.

Current academic links are with the Universities of Birmingham, Stafford and Cardiff and the new medical school at Keele.  There is also a flourishing twinning arrangement with a Hospice in Bangalore, South India and established educational links with services in Argentina, Sweden and former Soviet Republics. Willingness to become involved in the Hospice’s international development links would be an advantage.

It is a delight to work in the catchment area which is largely rural and which offers an excellent range of cultural, outdoor and sporting pursuits. Local schools are of high quality and there are good road links to Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

Supported by the two local PCTs, the post is a joint appointment between Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and Severn Hospice. Although based at the Hospice, service provision will incorporate all care settings.

Applicants should be on the GMC’s Specialist Registrar or within 3 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview which is expected in December 2009. A willingness to participate in teaching, audit and research is essential.

For an application pack email HR@severnhospice.org.uk or telephone Gaynor Taylor on 01743 236565 (ext. 567).

The Hospice relies on hundreds of people who give their time freely as volunteers. If you would like to volunteer to help us in our work please visit the volunteering page.
