Other Support for Patients

We provide palliative care. This is care that addresses your overall needs. We offer expert medical care of course, but our services go much further than that.

The Social Work team

We employ a team of qualified and experienced social workers who can work with you, your relatives, your friends and your carers. They can talk to people on your behalf, (for example, you might like some help discussing your changing needs with your housing association, or perhaps you would like help applying to the Council to fund some changes to your house so that you can carry on living at home).

They can provide information and advice (for example, you might need help finding the right nursing home or some support dealing with the benefits system). They can provide counselling and emotional and psychological support to help you or your relations individually, or to help the whole family talk to each other.

They can provide help to your family on coping with loss and change, and work with your children, helping them to understand loss. With the help of a team of trained volunteers, they provide a bereavement service including a specific service for children where there is a serious illness in the family, or when there has been the death of a significant family member. You can find out more about our bereavement services here.

As a Severn Hospice patient or the relative of a Hospice patient, you can speak to a social worker by asking any nurse or doctor or any other member of the Hospice team or phone the Hospice on 01743 236565.

Chaplaincy Service

We were founded as a non-religious organisation but we do have a team of paid and volunteer chaplains. Our services are available to you, if you would like them, whether you have a religion or not, and whatever faith you follow. The Chaplaincy Service has two members of staff and a team of skilled professional volunteer chaplains.

The chaplains can talk through issues that are affecting you spiritually, provide a link to religious groups outside the Hospice and lead services. They can organise baptisms, confirmations, weddings, wedding blessings, renewal of marriage vows and funerals (whether religious or non-religious). They can also offer anointing with oil which has been blessed by the Bishop in the Cathedral and an opportunity for confession.

Our Hospices at Shrewsbury and Telford each have a place dedicated to quiet and reflection. Some see this room as a chapel, some as a retreat and others as a sanctuary. You and your friends and relatives are welcome to make use of these spaces at any time.

We hold services and times of reflection regularly and you, your friends and your relatives are welcome to attend any of these. If you would like, we can arrange for representatives of your faith to have input into our services. They can also visit you at any time.

You and your friends and family are welcome make use of our Chaplaincy Service at any time while you are under the care of the Hospice and afterwards, for as long as you and they need to. If you would like to see a Chaplain, please ask a nurse or any member of the Hospice team at Newtown, Shrewsbury or Telford or call the Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury on 01743 236565.
