Dragon Boat Festival 2012

Photo of a boat coming towards the camera at the 2011 Dragon Boat FestivalOur 2011 Dragon Boat Festival was such a success we ended up with a waiting list of 16 teams, all hoping another team would drop out and give them the chance to compete.

Many of those teams have been calling us on a weekly basis asking to sign up for the 2012 so they do not miss out again.

We have therefore decided to open registration for the event (very) early to give them – and you – a chance. We also hope that by signing up so early teams will be able to get really stuck in to their fundraising activities and take the amount raised by the event to a completely new level.

Each team that takes part is guaranteed two races. The final will feature the six fastest boats, based on their best time overall. We usually manage to fit in a second final featuring the six boats that came next, so a third of the teams will end up racing three times. Three teams race at a time in the heats, while the final features six boats racing at once.

Close up shot of four men racingAs always, we will be working with Dragon Boat Events Ltd to provide the Festival. Their expert staff will look after teams on the water and will provide all the equipment and training needed. All they ask is that you can swim 50m while wearing a bouyancy aid (please see the terms and conditions of entry for additional conditions relating to age and health).

DBE get pretty competitive on the day so you can be sure that your helm will do everything possible to make sure you win each of your heats, and possibly even the final!

During the day you can relax in Beck’s Field enjoying a fantastic view of the racing and sampling the top quality catering on site. You can also bring your own barbecue and make the most of what we hope will be great weather with your friends and family. We encourage the teams to wear fancy dress, welcome team supporters and do everything we can to ensure you have a day you will never forget.

It costs £200 to register for the event and we will be allocating places on a first come, first served basis. This event is always oversubscribed but we will be continuing to cap it at 33 teams to ensure that those who do take part have the best possible day.

Picture of the winning team from the 2011 eventOnce your team has a place we ask you to raise at least £1000 in sponsorship. You can have between 15 and 20 people in your team so the maximum anyone has to raise is £80. We do ask everybody to try to raise as much as they can rather than simply aiming for the minimum. The funds raised from events like this are essential to our work.

The 2012 Dragon Boat Festival will take place in Shrewsbury on Sunday 24 June. Once you have registered you will be sent full details of the location and what to expect from the day, along with sponsor forms and all the other information you need to get started with your fundraising.

Please be sure to read our own terms and conditions and DBE’s terms and conditions before registering for the event, and make sure that all of your team members are aware of then. By regsitering you are indicating that you and the rest of the team accept their contents and will be bound by them.
