Sophie’s story
Sophie Evans is a 21 year old Student Nurse from Sutton Heights, Telford. She talks about her experiences while on a placement at Severn Hospice.
I’ve just passed my exams and completed my nursing training at Staffordshire University. As part of the last year I had to undertake a five-week elective placement. I wanted to come to Severn Hospice to find out more about their work. I’ve been interested in palliative care since my grandfather was ill.
I was a bit scared when she came to the Hospice for the first time, partly because it was new, and partly because it was something different from anything I’d experienced before. But I found the Hospice so welcoming. I felt like a member of the team from the very first day.
Being at Severn Hospice has changed me as a person. I have learned a lot about the different aspects of patient care, particularly the spiritual side – caring for a patient’s every need and doing things to make the patients feel happy.
After spending time at Severn Hospice I know that I want to work in the field of palliative care. The Hospice is just so welcoming, friendly and very caring.
