Volunteer Long Service awards
Posted on Dec 13, 2011
Our volunteers are an essential part of the Hospice family and help us in so many ways to care for patients and their loved ones. We paid tribute to them during two special ceremonies at our Shrewsbury and Telford sites with awards going to those who have reached certain milestones in their volunteer career.
With an impressive cumulative total of 260 years volunteering at the Hospice the long serving volunteers received awards between five and 20 years long service. The High Sheriff of Shropshire was on hand to present the awards to our Telford volunteers.
Jane Radford, voluntary services manager for Severn Hospice, said: ‘Like so many charities we simply would not be able to function without our fabulous volunteers. They are all truly remarkable people who give up their free time to make a difference in their local community. From driving patients to and from hospital appointments to helping out in the kitchens we rely on our army of volunteers to help the thousands of people who need our care and support each year.
‘It is a privilege to work alongside these amazing people who bring so much to the Hospice.’
One volunteer who received their twenty years long service is Jane Brodie-Wood from Market Drayton. As one of the founder members of the bereavement group Strollers Jane has worked at both Shrewsbury and Telford Hospices. She said: ‘Volunteering at the Hospice is one of the most rewarding things you can do. I have watched the Hospice in Shrewsbury grow and seen the building of the Hospice in Telford. It has been a real honour to have worked at both.
‘The camaraderie you feel being part of the Hospice family is something I will always remember.’
Volunteer Linda Poole from Lilleshall who also received her 20 years long service award said: ‘I can’t believe it’s been 20 years, I have to pinch myself sometimes.
‘As a Day Hospice volunteer your main job is to be a listening ear for the patients. We have a coffee and chat about how they have got on during the week. It’s good to know that you are making a positive difference.’
