A Shrewsbury based composer is to write a special piece of music for the world renowned Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival taking place in July.

Matthew Hall from Shrewsbury has been commissioned to compose the piece as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Ironbridge becoming a World Heritage Site.

The premier performance of the piece is set to take place at the prestigious Last Night of the Proms concert on Saturday 16 July.

Composer, Matthew Hall, commented: ‘It’s a real honour to be involved with the 25th anniversary celebrations of Ironbridge becoming a World Heritage Site. The Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival is held in high regard by brass band aficionados and by those who simply enjoy a great day out.’

Sue Palmer, Festival organiser, said: ‘We are delighted that Matthew has agreed to be part of the celebrations. He is a well respected and accomplished composer.

‘Every year hundreds of people from far and wide descend on Ironbridge to enjoy all the music the festival has to offer. Over two days a number of bands will perform for free in the grounds of the Museum of Iron in Coalbrookdale.

‘One of the many highlights of the Festival is the Last Night of the Proms concert. This year will be no different especially as we will have the premier of Matthew’s creation.’

After two sell out years the concert will be held outside for the very first time on the lawns of the museum. Tickets for the concert cost £10 with all proceeds being donated to Severn Hospice.
