Brand new route added to Great Big Bike Ride
Posted on Aug 17, 2009
The annual Severn Hospice Great Big Bike Ride takes place on Saturday 5 September. The popular 12 mile, 26 mile and 100km routes all make a welcome return and an extra six mile ride has been added for younger and inexperienced riders.
All routes are circular, starting and finishing at Blists Hill Victorian Town. The six mile route takes riders down to Jackfield then along to the Iron Bridge before looping back via Route 55, the Silkin Way.
The 12 mile route heads up to Telford Town Park then down to the Gorge via Madeley. Riders head to Jackfield via the Iron Bridge, then complete the loop back up to Blists Hill. The 26 mile route is similar but includes a new stretch from Jackfield to Bridgnorth and back.
All three routes rely heavily on cycle paths, with the six mile ride being completely off-road other than a short stretch in Jackfield. The 12 and 26 mile routes also include some on-road cycling on the way into Ironbridge. Generous time is allowed to complete the circuits to allow participants to relax in the cafes and other attractions of Ironbridge and the surrounding area.
The 100km ride is for more serious cyclists and is a road route. Heading first to Severn Hospice in Apley Castle, cyclists continue into north Shropshire, looping round to Edgmond before returning to Blists Hill via Shifnal.
Registration for all four rides is now open and forms for the three longer routes can be downloaded here or can be requested from appeals@severnhospice.org.uk. Forms for the six mile ride can be requested by emailing us and will appear on the website shortly.
